Art in Action: Students Bringing New Life to Downtown Porterville

Working on the Mural Downtown

Something vibrant is unfolding at 23 E. Mill Avenue. If you’ve walked past the former site of the Porter Theater recently, you might have noticed a surge of color and creativity. We are thrilled to announce the launch of a new Student-Led Mural Project, a collaborative effort dedicated to honoring our local first responders.

From Campus Roots to City Streets

This project didn’t start in a vacuum. It was born from the momentum of the student-driven mural created on campus over the summer. That success sparked a bigger vision: taking that artistic energy into the heart of our community.

The PC Art Club, alongside Fine Arts Faculty Jackie Buttice and dedicated supporters, pitched the concept to the City of Porterville. With the city’s enthusiastic approval of the student-designed concept, generous support from the Parks and Recreation Department for paints and supplies, and manpower and a lift provided by the building's owner, the "dream" officially became a "work-in-progress" this past Monday afternoon and evening.

Honoring History and Heroes

The location carries deep local significance. Situated next to the site where the historic Porter Theater once stood before its tragic fire, the mural serves as a bridge between Porterville's past and its future. By focusing the theme on first responders, our students are using their brushes to say "thank you" to those who protect our community every day.

Watch the Progress

The muralists began their work this week and will continue to put their brushes to work over the next week to bring their final vision to life. This is a labor of love, and we’d love for the community to be a part of the journey.

  • Where: 23 E. Mill Avenue (Next to the former Porter Theater site)
  • When: Work continues over the next week (including today).
  • Stay Updated: Keep your eyes on The Crow’s Nest for behind-the-scenes photos and progress reports as the mural nears completion.

Come out and cheer on our student artists as they transform a blank wall into a masterpiece of gratitude!
